Arsjad Rasjid, Chairman of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) led the ASEAN-BAC delegation on a roadshow to Phnom Penh, Cambodia following their visit to Manila. During the visit, the ASEAN-BAC delegation held discussions with various stakeholders regarding several priority issues and legacy programs of Indonesia\u2019 ASEAN-BAC leadership. Furthermore, the ASEAN-BAC delegations extensively discussed the potential for broad cooperation between Indonesia and Cambodia specifically in digital transformation, tourism and establishing ASEAN as the new hub of the global supply chain.<\/p>\n
In 2022, during Cambodia's ASEAN chairmanship, there was a strong emphasis on promoting ASEAN centrality and unity in advancing the digital economy, e-commerce, and industrial transformation. This included a focus on enhancing regional connectivity and fostering people-to-people exchange. Building on this momentum, the Indonesia ASEAN-BAC chairmanship has prioritized digital transformation as a means to further increase trade and investment in 2023.<\/p>\n
ASEAN-BAC Aims for Digital Transformation to Strengthen Trade and Investment<\/strong><\/p>\n This includes initiatives such as ASEAN QR Code, Marketplace Lending Platform, and Wiki Entrepreneur which aim to improve bilateral cooperation in terms of trade and investment between countries in the region through digital transformation. \u201cThrough these efforts, we are partnering with Cambodia on these initiatives to create a more robust and inclusive economy, attract foreign investment, and strengthen the region\u2019s position as a key player in the global digital landscape.\u201d added Arsjad Rasjid<\/p>\n Cambodia and Indonesia have enjoyed robust merchandise trade volume, which totaled $948.533 million in 2022, with the biggest contributor of Cambodian imports constituting a 96% share. Cambodia exports mostly footwear, crochet, accessories, and glassware to Indonesia. On the other hand, Cambodia is also a distributor of Indonesian products including food and beverages, cooking oil, healthcare and medicine products, homecare, fertilizers, and paper products.<\/p>\n \u201cImagine if we could conduct these trade transactions with the help of digitalisation, the target of bilateral trade between Indonesia and Cambodia expected by the Minister of Trade Pan Sorasak to be more than $1 billion this year can be achieved,\" added Bernardino Vega, Alternate Chair of ASEAN-BAC<\/p>\n Arsjad Rasjid: Indonesia and Cambodia Can Increase Partnership in the Tourism Sector<\/strong><\/p>\n In addition, Arsjad said that this series of business meetings also opened the door for tourism partnerships between public and private organizations of the two countries.<\/p>\n With this visit, Indonesia and Cambodia have brought renewed optimism to the Cambodian travel industry for increased bilateral tourism, investment flows, and economic growth. Air Asia will soon operate flights between Jakarta and Phnom Penh four days a week from the end of April, benefiting the Cambodian tourism industry and promoting trade ties between the two countries. Despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in 2022, there was an all-time record of 75,653 Indonesian visitors to Cambodia, accounting for 3.3% of all foreign visitors to Cambodia.<\/p>\n Strengthening the Agricultural Supply Chain Through Closed Loop Inclusion between Indonesia and Cambodia<\/strong><\/p>\n Recognizing the abundance of agricultural resources in the region and the growing threat of climate change, food security has become a top priority for ASEAN nations. Capitalizing on this cooperative momentum, Indonesia's chairmanship of the ASEAN-BAC presents an opportunity to establish the region as a new hub in the global supply chain, leveraging its rich food and agricultural resources. Arsjad recommended that ASEAN countries work together to develop their downstream agricultural sectors and ecosystems, attract investment, generate jobs, and ensure a stable and accessible food supply for the region.<\/p>\n One suggested solution to address this urgent issue is the implementation of an inclusive closed-loop system. This comprehensive approach aims to empower farmers and promote sustainable food production by providing access to finance, knowledge, technology, and market opportunities.
