Chair of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC), Arsjad Rasjid, invites British entrepreneurs to invest in carbon reduction and healthcare improvement in Southeast Asian countries. This invitation was made during the ASEAN-BAC roadshow in London, United Kingdom, from May 14-18 2023.<\/p>\n
\"The efforts of Southeast Asian countries to achieve net-zero emissions require close collaboration and partnerships with trading partners outside the region, and one of them is the United Kingdom,\" said Arsjad on Friday, May 19 2023.<\/p>\n
ASEAN Forges Cooperation with Trading Partners in Sustainable Development<\/strong><\/p>\n Currently, ASEAN is steadily moving towards achieving net-zero by 2050 or earlier. Entrepreneurs in Southeast Asian countries agree that achieving the net-zero target by 2050 or earlier requires close partnerships with trading partners from various countries. It is mentioned that ASEAN countries contribute around 8% of global carbon emissions, necessitating concrete steps and hard work to achieve net-zero.<\/p>\n \"The United Kingdom serves as the gateway for ASEAN-BAC to European countries, considering the achievements and experiences of the United Kingdom as a voluntary carbon pioneer initiated by the Bank of England. ASEAN leaders have tasked us with implementing projects named the ASEAN Net Zero Hub and Carbon Center of Excellence, which will be carried out sustainably,\" Arsjad explained.<\/p>\n Arsjad added, \"The ASEAN Net Zero Hub serves as a platform for industry stakeholders to exchange ideas and embark on the journey towards decarbonization. Meanwhile, the Carbon Center of Excellence acts as a platform to enhance knowledge and information exchange for carbon trading activities.\"<\/p>\n In September 2023, the legacy project initiative related to the Carbon Center of Excellence is targeted to result in what is called the ASEAN Alliance for Scaling Up Carbon. Its function is to serve as a multi-stakeholder platform between the private sector and governments to facilitate better carbon trading.<\/p>\n Support from the Private Sector and Businesses for Sustainable Development in ASEAN<\/strong><\/p>\n ASEAN-BAC is supported by PT Astra International Tbk and PT Indika Energy Tbk. They continue to seek breakthroughs in collaborating on sustainable energy sectors in ASEAN, including with stakeholders in the United Kingdom. Indonesian companies play a crucial role in achieving ASEAN's net-zero aspirations as Indonesia has the largest economy in the ASEAN region.<\/p>\n Strategic steps are needed to ensure that industrial emissions are fully absorbed by the Earth's ecosystem, leaving no trace in the atmosphere and becoming greenhouse gasses.<\/p>\n \"We involve PT Astra International Tbk., PT Bank Permata Tbk., PT Elang Mahkota Teknologi Tbk., and April Group to take concrete steps in delivering sustainable aspirations for the realization of net-zero in sustainable development. This is crucial,\" explained Arsjad.<\/p>\n President Director of PT Astra International Tbk (ASII), Djony Bunarto Tjondro, explained that Astra has launched Astra 2030 Sustainability Aspirations, which includes a roadmap for Astra Group's transition towards becoming a more sustainable company by 2030 and beyond.<\/p>\n \"These sustainability aspirations are based on Astra's new sustainability framework, which integrates sustainability fully into Astra's Triple-P Roadmap Strategy (Portfolio, People, and Public Contribution), balancing present and future needs,\" said Djony.<\/p>\n In line with Astra, Indika Energy also emphasizes the concept of sustainable development. \"We support efforts that focus on sustainable development, including Indika Energy's investment in low-carbon businesses such as electric vehicles and solar energy,\" said Azis Armand, Vice President Director and Group CEO of Indika Energy.<\/p>\n The Need for Cooperation in the Healthcare Field between the UK and ASEAN<\/strong><\/p>\n The ASEAN-BAC visit to the UK also aimed to invite British businesses and the private sector to invest in ASEAN. Citing data from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021, ASEAN has the highest tuberculosis (TB) rate in the world, accounting for over a quarter of the global burden.<\/p>\n Additionally, the HIV epidemic in ASEAN is the third largest in the world, and the transmission of malaria outbreaks is the second highest globally. Southeast Asian countries have a 62% death rate from non-communicable diseases, encompassing 9 million lives annually.
