Arsjad Rasjid, Chair of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC), is spearheading the commitment for sustainable development in the business and private sector across ASEAN through innovative initiatives and collaborations with stakeholders. Endorsed by ASEAN leaders during the 42nd ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, sustainable development has become a shared vision that encompasses the reduction of carbon emissions, promotion of green industries, and harnessing renewable energy, such as electric vehicles (EVs).<\/p>\n
Arsjad also conveyed that sustainable development in ASEAN is a necessary endeavor, as it is globally. Sustainable development will reduce the impacts of climate change threats, accompanied by the commitment of various stakeholders to create a sustainable and green industrial, economic, business, and environmental ecosystem.<\/p>\n
In addition to the ASEAN Summit, the priority to prioritize sustainable development has also been recently advocated at the G7 meeting in Hiroshima, Japan. Globally, sustainable development is a necessity to create a better and greener ecosystem for the economy, industry, environment, and society. Countries in the ASEAN region that are vulnerable to climate change have also agreed to promote sustainable development as a priority issue. Cooperation with the business and private sectors is vital in achieving the sustainable development goals, and ASEAN-BAC is fully committed to supporting these endeavors.<\/p>\n
ASEAN's Commitment Towards Sustainable Development and Net Zero<\/strong><\/p>\n Radju Munusamy, Policy Manager for the Sustainable Development Working Group, stated that there are three main priorities: developing a common understanding and framework for net zero, leveraging sustainable financing, and enabling a just and affordable energy transition.<\/p>\n \"ASEAN is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, making it important for ASEAN to work together and have a shared action plan that can be adopted and implemented by stakeholders on the journey to achieving net zero. Under the leadership of ASEAN-BAC, the ASEAN Taxonomy Version 2 has been released in March 2023, and it is designed to enable a just transition towards sustainable finance adoption by ASEAN Member States, it will help to harmonize the classification of sustainable activities and assets across ASEAN,\" emphasized Radju.<\/p>\n As a concrete effort, ASEAN-BAC has launched sustainable projects to support businesses in reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to a sustainable future. These initiatives include the ASEAN Net Zero Hub and the ASEAN Carbon Center of Excellence.<\/p>\n \"The ASEAN Net Zero Hub provides a platform for stakeholders to exchange knowledge and best practices in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving carbon neutrality. This collaboration among governments, businesses, and civil society drives decarbonization in ASEAN industries,\" explained Muhammad Yusrizki, Legacy Lead for the ASEAN Net Zero Hub.<\/p>\n Dharsono Hartono, Legacy Lead for the ASEAN Carbon Center of Excellence, highlighted the significance of this project. \"The ASEAN Carbon Center of Excellence facilitates the sharing of knowledge and best practices on nature-based solutions and carbon trading. By building a strong network of market players, we promote ASEAN's climate goals and foster a green economy through nature-based solutions,\" said Dharsono.<\/p>\n Through these sustainable projects, ASEAN-BAC demonstrates its commitment to promoting sustainable and green industries. Promoting sustainable development within the private sector is crucial for maintaining a balance between economic growth and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n \"Transition requires a significant commitment and comes at a high cost. But it is something we must do because its benefits will be felt by our future generations. Moreover, ASEAN contributes approximately 8% of global carbon emissions and is part of a region vulnerable to climate change. That is why we must take action starting now,\" stated Arsjad.<\/p>\n Investing Among ASEAN Countries and ASEAN Trading Partners is Crucial in Achieving Sustainable Development<\/strong><\/p>\n To establish partnerships and concrete action for these initiatives, ASEAN-BAC has engaged eight countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, Myanmar, and recently the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n The ASEAN roadshow, covering Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Brunei, and Myanmar, aims to enhance regional integration and establish ASEAN countries as the leading hub for electric vehicles (EVs). The combined efforts of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, which account for 31% of global nickel production, have the potential to control over 50% of nickel reserves, strengthening their position in the EV industry. Brunei, strategically located on Borneo island, aspires to become a prominent green hub in ASEAN by prioritizing sustainable development through low-carbon ecosystem development and nature-based solutions. Cambodia has a thriving market for EV sales and has already implemented incentives to reduce import duties on electric vehicles, making them approximately 50% cheaper than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.<\/p>\n Myanmar, with its abundant reserves of rare minerals like dysprosium and terbium, crucial for lightweight EV manufacturing, holds great potential for contributing significantly to the region's sustainable development efforts.<\/p>\n Furthermore, ASEAN-BAC has conducted roadshows in various ASEAN partner countries, including the United Kingdom. In ASEAN's pursuit of sustainable development, ASEAN-BAC extends an invitation to British entrepreneurs to invest in carbon reduction. Leveraging the achievements and experiences of the United Kingdom as a voluntary carbon pioneer initiated by the Bank of England, the United Kingdom serves as the gateway for ASEAN-BAC to European countries.<\/p>\n \u201cAs ASEAN takes these bold steps towards sustainability, we envision a future where economic growth and environmental sustainability go hand in hand. ABIS 2023 will feature various events such as investment forums, panel discussions with key figures and world leaders, CEOs, as well as bilateral and multilateral meetings.
