ASEAN continues to accelerate efforts to ensure that all individuals in the region have access to affordable dengue fever vaccines, as the tropical climate region aims to eliminate deaths caused by dengue fever. This statement is made by Arsjad Rasjid, Chair of ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC), coinciding with ASEAN Dengue Day (ADD).<\/p>\n
Investment in the Healthcare Sector for the Development of Dengue Vaccines<\/p>\n
Arsjad stated that the key to expanding access to dengue fever vaccines lies in mobilizing more resources and investments in healthcare, life sciences manufacturing, and research and development (R&D) through greater collaboration between the public and private sectors.<\/p>\n
\"Dengue fever has long been a disease that hampers economic growth and health resilience in this region. However, with recent breakthroughs in medical technology, we can effectively address this issue through the right strategic partnerships between the private and public sectors,\" said Arsjad.<\/p>\n
Arsjad also emphasized that ADD serves as a reminder to continuously enhance collaborative efforts in preventive measures, including conducting more clinical trials for vaccines and therapies that are suitable and ready for use by the population.<\/p>\n
ADD is observed annually on June 15 to raise public awareness about dengue fever and mobilize resources for its prevention and control. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Southeast Asia region experienced a 46 percent increase in dengue fever cases from 2015 to 2019, while dengue-related deaths decreased by two percent during the same period. Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted to humans by mosquitoes and is commonly found in tropical and subtropical climates.<\/p>\n
Shuhaela Fabya Haqim, Policy Manager of the ASEAN-BAC Health Working Group, stated that the ASEAN region can benefit significantly from partnerships between the public and private sectors in the field of healthcare.<\/p>\n
\"The COVID-19 pandemic has taught us a valuable lesson about the importance of mitigating future crises. An integral part of this mitigation plan is to develop a robust ASEAN health investment roadmap that can support the well-being of the population and the region's growth simultaneously. With increased investments, health equity can be more attainable throughout the region, making access to affordable dengue fever vaccines a reality in the near future,\" said Shuhaela, who is also the Country Director of the Tony Blair Institute of Global Change in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The Role of the Business and Private Sectors in Healthcare Infrastructure Development<\/p>\n
Through the ASEAN-BAC Health Working Group, the group aims to focus on three key areas in 2023: firstly, enhancing ASEAN's health resilience by increasing critical Vaccine, Therapeutics, and Diagnostics (VTD) research and development and manufacturing within ASEAN through policy advocacy and partnerships with the private sector. Secondly, contributing to the development of a unified ASEAN Healthcare Market and reducing private sector investment risks in research, development, and manufacturing. Thirdly, promoting innovative, high-tech investments within ASEAN through facilitating regional programs in genomics and biologics.<\/p>\n
Various companies in ASEAN have also committed to developing supportive infrastructure for strengthening the healthcare sector in the region, such as PT Astra International Tbk and Sinar Mas through Asuransi Sinar Mas, also Bakrie Group.<\/p>\n
