Airlangga Hartarto: IEU-CEPA to Be Signed on September 23, 2025

Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto announced that the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) is set to be signed on September 23, 2025.

Airlangga made the announcement during a Luncheon & Discussion between the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, held at the RGE Lounge, Kadin Tower, Jakarta, on Thursday (September 4, 2025).

“With regard to IEU-CEPA, God willing, it will be signed on September 23. Both the law and the agreement itself will be finalized and signed,” said Airlangga.

He explained that the agreement is currently being reviewed by the European Union Parliament. EU Commissioner Maros Šefčovič and other EU representatives are expected to visit Indonesia shortly to finalize the signing.

Airlangga also revealed that Indonesia is currently engaged in discussions regarding trade cooperation with the United States.

“As for the U.S., we are now discussing the technical aspects of what will be included and excluded from the agreement. The U.S. side is also enthusiastic about continuing negotiations with Indonesia,” he added.

Meanwhile, James T. Riady, Coordinator Vice Chairman for Foreign Affairs at Kadin Indonesia, previously emphasized that the IEU-CEPA will serve as a strategic bridge, connecting Indonesia’s innovation, resources, and talent with the vast European market.

Through this agreement, James noted, Indonesia’s key export products—such as palm oil, timber, textiles, electronics, and creative industry goods—will gain broader access to Europe with fewer trade barriers.

“Today, Indonesia stands at a crossroads in global trade history,” said James during a socialization and preparation event for the IEU-CEPA political agreement and the Indonesia–U.S. trade framework, titled "Exploring and Implementing Bilateral Trade Pathways: Indonesia–EU and Indonesia–U.S." held at Kadin Tower, Jakarta, on Monday (August 4, 2025).

James stressed that this trade agreement is not merely about tariffs or numbers on paper, but about turning dreams into real opportunities.

“This means our farmers could see their harvests sold in Belgian and European markets. Artisans from Jepara could see their furniture in homes across America. And young Indonesian engineers could play a role in the global electric vehicle industry,” he explained.

According to James, these opportunities demand bold entrepreneurship, cross-sector collaboration, and a high degree of creativity. Indonesia must also strengthen its supply chains while upholding globally recognized environmental and labor standards.
