The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) in collaboration with Privy, a certified digital identity and signature service provider organized a panel discussion entitled “Consumer Protection 4.0: Implementation of Digital Identity to Improve Consumer Security in the Digital Ecosystem”. The event, which is part of Kadin Indonesia's Economic & Financial Technology Agency (BENEFIT) work program, took place at Mandarin Oriental Jakarta and was attended by hundreds of representatives of Kadin members and administrators.
Digital identity has a similar concept to identity in the real world, which is a file or data that shows complete and legal personal data. The validity of digital identity is very important in encouraging work professionalism, especially because duplication or impersonation is easy to do. The World Bank in 2021 noted that as many as 3.3 billion people in the world do not have access to a government-recognized digital identity for online transactions. On the other hand, cybercrime based on identity theft or forgery is also increasingly prevalent. According to data from the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) in 2023, personal data theft increased from 7.96% to 20.97% while online fraud also rose from 10.3% to 32.5%.
Ensuring identity validation and personal data protection is becoming increasingly important and must be pursued by both consumers and industry players in electronic transactions today. In order to increase public awareness and understanding, especially business actors, regarding the benefits of using Digital Identity and related consumer protection aspects, BENEFIT Kadin and Privy held a seminar with experts and practitioners in the fields of digital security, digital identity, and consumer protection.
“Digital Identity is an electronic representation that contains a person's complete and legal personal data. The validity of this identity is very important, to ensure security in various digital service transactions.” said Deputy for Government and Human Development Security and Password, BSSN, Sulistyo in his speech.
In the keynote speech session, Deputy Minister of the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information, Nezar Patria said, “Digital identity will provide easy access to public and financial services more quickly and efficiently, and can protect personal data and electronic transactions. The validity of a clear and secure digital identity will increase professionalism and trust in digital transactions. This effort is also in line with the government's vision to create a safe and trusted digital ecosystem for the entire community”.
In line with the Deputy Minister of Kemenkominfo and the Deputy of BSSN, the Head of Economic and Financial Technology of Kadin Indonesia, Pandu Sjahrir emphasized, “Digital identity is a critical component in digital transactions. The security and convenience of digital service consumers depends on the use of digital identity properly and correctly. Kadin Indonesia is very aware of the importance of understanding and using digital identity properly and correctly in optimizing the growth of the digital economy ecosystem in Indonesia, therefore we are committed to supporting the socialization of digital identity and practical strategies for its application for the business world.”
Privy CEO and Deputy Head of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Economic and Financial Technology Agency, Marshall Pribadi also said in the panel discussion session, “Collaboration between the government, private sector, and civil society is very important in ensuring the successful implementation of digital identity. As a digital trust service provider that includes digital identity, certified electronic signature and recorded electronic delivery services, Privy is committed to supporting the creation of a safe and trusted digital environment for all users”.
