Sumsel Coffee Drinking Event Holds MURI Record

The Province of South Sumatra (South Sumatra) together with Kadin South Sumatra held a simultaneous coffee drinking activity at Benteng Kuto Besak (BKB) involving 10 thousand participants from Palembang City and 17 South Sumatra districts with a total of 27 thousand participants. This activity broke the MURI (Indonesian World Record Museum) record for the most South Sumatra coffee drinking.

Chairman of Kadin Indonesia, Arsjad Rasjid said that around 26 per cent of the total national coffee production comes from South Sumatra. This makes South Sumatra the largest coffee-producing province in Indonesia by 2023.

"South Sumatra's coffee commodity has proven to have made a big contribution," said Arsjad who attended the South Sumatra coffee drinking event on Saturday (13/7/2024).

According to him, the reason South Sumatra coffee is not well known to many people is because this commodity is branded by other parties. Therefore, Kadin is committed to bringing South Sumatra coffee upscale and global, expanding market access, opening access to financing and utilising digitalisation.

"We must be able to promote South Sumatra coffee to go global and prosper coffee farmers," he said.

On the same occasion, Chairman of the Governing Council of Kadin Indonesia, Anindya Bakrie revealed that a quarter of coffee in Indonesia is produced from South Sumatra, so it can become a national coffee centre.

He said that this activity was expected to increase brand awareness and boost the economy of South Sumatra as the centre of national coffee producers.

"This can encourage MSMEs and make South Sumatra the centre of national coffee producers," he concluded.
