Jakarta – The House of Representatives (DPR RI) Legislative Body (Baleg) has called for strengthening the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) so that it can better support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in accessing international markets. This is one of the directions of the proposed revision to Law No. 1 of 1987 on the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which is currently being deliberated by the DPR RI.

Deputy Chairman of the DPR RI Legislative Body, Sturman Panjaitan, said Kadin needs to play a more concrete role in helping MSMEs improve their capacity and competitiveness, so they are not solely reliant on the domestic market.

“(Through this bill) we are strengthening Kadin’s role. Kadin must have a comprehensive role, and it is one of, or perhaps the only, business organizations that helps the public, particularly MSMEs, to go global. They should not merely be strong in their own backyard,” Sturman said after a meeting to adopt the decision on the harmonization, consolidation, and refinement of the concept of the bill on amendments to Law No. 1 of 1987 on the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, at the DPR RI Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday evening (Sept. 21, 2026).

He explained that strengthening Kadin’s role has become increasingly important amid changes in the global economy and rapid developments in digital technology. Therefore, regulations governing Kadin also need to be adjusted to reflect current conditions.

In addition, Kadin’s institutional role needs to be directed toward strengthening its partnership with the government in the fields of trade, the economy, and industry. The existence of chambers of commerce in various countries also demonstrates the importance of business organizations in building trade networks with other countries.

“To ensure that Kadin can truly provide value as a strategic partner to the government in the fields of trade, the economy, and industry,” added the politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) faction.

Therefore, the DPR RI Legislative Body has agreed and expressed its support for updating the 1987 Kadin Law to reflect current developments, digitalization, and other relevant changes.

The DPR RI Legislative Body has completed the harmonization and refinement of the substance of the draft amendments to Law No. 1 of 1987 on the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Commission VI of the DPR RI, as the proposing commission, will subsequently bring the results to a DPR RI plenary session for consideration as a formal DPR RI initiative.
