Anindya Bakrie Highlights Hong Kong’s Strategic Role in Strengthening Indonesia’s Trade and Investment

Jakarta – Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin Indonesia), Anindya Novyan Bakrie, believes that Hong Kong plays a strategic role in strengthening economic cooperation between Indonesia and China, while also promoting increased trade and investment that can generate jobs across the country.

Anindya, popularly known as Anin, made the remarks after attending the Hong Kong University – Centre on Contemporary China and the World Dinner titled “Advancing China–ASEAN Regional Cooperation: Hong Kong’s Strategic Role amid Shifting Geopolitical Dynamics” at the Ritz-Carlton Mega Kuningan Hotel in South Jakarta on Thursday evening (June 11, 2026).

Anin said the forum discussed efforts to strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and Hong Kong, which is also expected to support closer economic ties between China and ASEAN countries.

“The discussion focused on how Indonesia and Hong Kong/China can work together more effectively, and how such cooperation can be further enhanced not only for Indonesia but also across ASEAN. However, our primary focus is Indonesia,” said Anin.

According to Anin, current global geopolitical dynamics make harmonious relations between Western and Eastern countries increasingly important.

“It was highlighted during the forum that the world is currently undergoing significant changes. Therefore, it is clear that strong relations between the West and the East are extremely important,” Anin said.

Anin noted that Hong Kong occupies a strategic position as a gateway to China, Indonesia’s largest trading partner.

“Hong Kong can be regarded as a gateway to China. As we know, China is Indonesia’s number one trading partner, while the United States ranks second,” Anin stated.

In addition, Anin highlighted Hong Kong’s contribution to investment in Indonesia.

“Secondly, we also see that Hong Kong has successfully brought approximately US$10.8 billion in investment,” he said.

Anin further emphasized that increasing trade and investment is essential to strengthening the national economy, particularly amid pressures on the Indonesian rupiah.

“Given the current situation, including pressure on the rupiah, there are only two ways forward: increasing trade and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). This is something that Kadin fully supports and continues to promote,” Anin concluded.
