Indonesia Records Highest Economic Growth Among G20 Countries, Government Maintains Financial System Stability to Sustain Growth Momentum

Indonesia’s national economy continues to demonstrate solid performance amid challenging global dynamics. This performance is reflected in the country’s economic growth in the first quarter of 2026, which remained strong and even outperformed a number of other countries. The achievement indicates that Indonesia’s economic fundamentals remain robust. The Government continues to maintain macroeconomic stability while accelerating growth through stronger coordination of fiscal, monetary, and financial sector policies.

“Based on the statistics announced earlier by BPS for the first quarter, the results are positive. Our growth reached 5.61 percent, and among G20 countries, this is the highest. We are above China, above Singapore, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and even the United States. This growth also exceeded the expectations of various institutions,” said Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto during a press statement by the Financial System Stability Committee (KSSK) following a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace on Tuesday (05/05).

During the meeting, Coordinating Minister Airlangga, together with Governor of Bank Indonesia Perry Warjiyo, Chairman of the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Chairman of the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS), and the Minister of Finance, reported to President Prabowo that the national economy continues to show positive performance. Consumption growth, export-import performance, and various business sectors such as manufacturing, trade, transportation, agriculture, and construction all continued to perform well.

From a macroeconomic stability perspective, inflation was successfully maintained at 2.42 percent. Indonesia’s trade balance also recorded a surplus for 71 consecutive months, while foreign exchange reserves remained strong. On the same occasion, Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo stated that one of the topics discussed during the meeting with the President was the rupiah exchange rate. Perry explained that the rupiah is currently at an undervalued level, but is expected to strengthen going forward in line with Indonesia’s strong economic fundamentals. He also noted that short-term pressure on the rupiah is largely influenced by global factors and seasonal trends.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa added that the national economy is currently entering a phase of accelerated growth. The Government, he said, will continue maintaining this momentum through stronger policy coordination and the preparation of additional stimulus measures to encourage economic activity.

Regarding financial market conditions, Chairwoman of the Board of Commissioners of OJK Friderica Widyasari Dewi explained that President Prabowo’s attention to capital outflows in the domestic financial market had also been discussed during the meeting. According to Friderica, the current outflow conditions are largely driven by global geopolitical and geo-economic factors, including persistently high global interest rates. Nevertheless, she expressed confidence that Indonesia’s economic fundamentals remain solid, and therefore market conditions are expected to improve going forward.

Friderica also stated that various improvement measures continue to be implemented to address global investors’ concerns regarding transparency and liquidity in Indonesia’s capital market. These measures include greater disclosure of shareholder data, more granular data presentation, disclosure of ultimate beneficial owners, and efforts to strengthen free float requirements.

Going forward, the Government remains optimistic that national economic performance will remain stable and continue strengthening, supported by solid fundamentals and sustained policy synergy. Through close coordination among authorities and stakeholders, Indonesia’s economy is expected to achieve higher growth, greater stability, and stronger competitiveness.
