Ahead of Peruvian President's Arrival, Kadin Indonesia: Peru Can Be Indonesia's Gateway to Latin American Market

Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Anindya Novyan Bakrie, received a visit from the Peruvian Ambassador to Indonesia, Luis Tsuboyama, at The Convergence Indonesia Office, Rasuna Epicentrum Area, South Jakarta, Wednesday (23/04/2025).

During the meeting, Anin expressed his appreciation for the visit and announced plans for Peruvian President Dina Boluarte to visit Indonesia in August.

"I am very grateful to receive a visit from the Ambassador of Peru. Incidentally, he said that in August 2025, the President of Peru will be present in Indonesia," she said.

According to Anin, this visit is a historic momentum because it will be the first visit of the President of Peru to Indonesia.

"He will come to Indonesia as the only country in Southeast Asia or ASEAN. So it is an honour for Indonesia," said Anin.

Furthermore, Anin explained Peru's strategic position as a member of APEC, the Pacific Alliance, and a country that is seeking membership in the OECD.

"Peru can be our gateway to Latin America. And Indonesia is a gateway to ASEAN," said Anin.

Anin also mentioned that currently Indonesia's trade balance with Peru records a surplus of around US$500 million, while imports from Peru are around US$50 million.

"But the key is not only to equalise, but to enlarge. Especially if it can become a kind of hub for Latin America and ASEAN," Anin explained.

On the same occasion, Ambassador Tsuboyama revealed that negotiations are currently underway for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between Peru and Indonesia.

"We are negotiating CEPA, a Comprehensive Trade Agreement between Peru and Indonesia. Hopefully, we can finalise and complete this negotiation soon. And of course, this will open up business and investment opportunities for both countries," he said.

Tsuboyama called Indonesia an important and potential partner, not only for Peru, but also for the Latin American region.

‘We are very distant countries, but I think the challenges we face in the future also bring opportunities in this complex world,’ he added.

Anin added that there is a great opportunity to finalise the CEPA during the visit of the President of Peru and the President of Indonesia in August.

"At least, when we meet in August, the shape will already be visible. This will open up a lot of trade opportunities," Anindya said.

Anin also mentioned the importance of market diversification given the current global conditions. With the price war between China and the US, Indonesia must look for alternative markets, in addition to continuing to expand cooperation with the US and China.

According to Anin, the Latin American region is now the concern of the government and national businesses.

"We provide input so that this CEPA is not only fast, but also accurate and can encourage investment in both countries. So it is not only trade, but also investment," said Anin.

Anin emphasised that both countries have vast potential for cooperation as they are both located in the Pacific region.

"But it seems that both governments are very eager to talk to Kadin Indonesia. And of course we will provide input. But in the end, it is the business sector that will implement it," said Anin.

Anin said that the global supply chain is the key to future cooperation.

‘We want to see everything as part of the world supply chain,’ she said.

She also mapped out potential trade between the two countries, including exports of fertilisers and critical minerals from Peru, as well as exports of processed food, apparel, and machinery from Indonesia.

"I believe this is just the beginning, because both are in the Pacific region, I believe this business cooperation is also very potential. Because we know that Peru is very advanced in this field. So this opens up a wider market," said Anin.

For information, this agenda was also attended by Vice Chairman for Foreign Affairs of Kadin Indonesia Bernardino M. Vega, Chairman of the Argentina, Chile and Peru Bilateral Committee of Kadin Indonesia Sari Kusumaningrum, Head of the Office of the Chairman of Kadin Indonesia Harya M. Hidayat, Deputy Chief of Mission Embassy of Peru in Jakarta Cristian Cordova, and Diplomatic Official Embassy of Peru in Jakarta Anne Avalos.
