Kadin DIY Presents “Symphony of 1,001 Batik Artisans,” Bringing Batik to Life in the Heart of Malioboro

Yogyakarta – The iconic Jalan Malioboro was transformed into a vibrant showcase of cultural heritage on Saturday morning, October 3, 2026, as thousands of hands from diverse backgrounds moved across white fabric, blowing through canting tools and tracing intricate patterns with hot wax.

Initiated by the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) of Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), the event, titled “Simfoni 1,001 Pembatik 2026” (Symphony of 1,001 Batik Artisans 2026), brought the heart of the Gudeg City to life in celebration of National Batik Day and ahead of the 270th anniversary of Yogyakarta City.

Representing the Chairman of Kadin DIY, Gunarta Adibrata emphasized that the large-scale event was one of the organization’s strategic programs for 2026, with a focus on women’s empowerment. For Yogyakarta, batik is not merely a revered heritage passed down through generations and rich in cultural philosophy and identity, but also an important driver of the local economy.

“Preserving batik is a collective effort to safeguard our identity while building our future,” Gunarta said in his remarks.

The enthusiasm surrounding the event was also highlighted by Organizing Committee Chairwoman Indah Rahayu Murniati, who also serves as Deputy Chairman for Women’s Empowerment at Kadin DIY.

Indah expressed her pride in seeing participants from diverse backgrounds, including batik enthusiasts, students, civil servants, and international tourists.

“Batik-making is truly beautiful. Through iconic Malioboro, we want to invite people from all walks of life, as well as MSME players, to make batik together,” Indah said.

Meanwhile, Jan Tielcke, a German tourist from Seligenstadt, one of the oldest towns in Germany’s Offenbach district, shared his experience from three years ago when he introduced batik to local residents and young people there. Through intensive workshops, young Germans were not only fascinated by the artistic value of traditional canting batik but also began to appreciate its intricate and time-consuming production process.

The spirit of preservation was also warmly embraced by the local younger generation. Zona Ayuningdyah Arifin, one of the young participants, said the event gave her an opportunity to learn more about batik in detail and develop a deeper appreciation for the ancestral craft.

The second-year student at SMA Muhammadiyah Kasihan Bantul, who worked on the Nitisekar motif, expressed hope that educational events like this would be held regularly every year. She said batik-making not only helps prevent cultural heritage from disappearing but also provides a positive activity that can effectively encourage teenagers to spend less time on their gadgets.

The cultural celebration, held from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. local time, featured a series of activities, including:

  • Opening Activities: A batik-themed bicycle parade, the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, a prayer, and a report from the Chair of the Simfoni 1,001 Pembatik 2026 Organizing Committee.
  • Main Ceremony: Remarks from the Kadin Chairman, the Head of the Agency for Industrial Services Standardization and Policy at the Ministry of Industry, and the Governor of DIY, represented by the Governor’s Expert Staff for Economic Development. The event was officially opened with a symbolic beating of the kentongan, a traditional bamboo slit drum, marking the start of the collective batik-making session.
  • Entertainment and Educational Program: Line-dancing performances, a traditional angklung music performance, an interactive talk show with the Batik Center, traditional dance performances, and a stage performance by Mazdar.
  • Closing: The symbolic presentation of the batik works, a group photo session, and acknowledgments to all members of the community involved in the event.

Through Simfoni 1,001 Pembatik, Yogyakarta once again demonstrated its position as a World Batik City, successfully blending longstanding traditions with the spirit of modernity while ensuring that the UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage, inscribed in Abu Dhabi, continues to live on and be preserved by younger generations.
