Jakarta – The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin Indonesia) held a Roundtable Dialogue themed “Good Organizational Practices in Disaster Management in Indonesia” at Kadin Indonesia Tower in South Jakarta on Wednesday (June 10, 2026). The forum brought together stakeholders from the business community and government institutions to strengthen collaboration in disaster management efforts across Indonesia.
Suryani Motik, Vice Chairwoman for Social Affairs and Disaster Management at Kadin Indonesia, stated that the discussion aimed to identify best practices implemented by the business sector in social and disaster-related initiatives, while also exploring more effective models of collaboration.
According to Suryani, the participants reflected the diversity of Indonesia’s business community, ranging from State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), national private companies, and multinational corporations to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and women entrepreneurs.
“We know very well that the business sector has been extensively involved in disaster management activities. Their contributions span the pre-disaster phase, emergency response during disasters, and post-disaster recovery. However, the challenge is that these efforts are often carried out independently. They have not yet been well coordinated or effectively integrated,” Suryani said.
She explained that the lack of coordination frequently results in aid being concentrated in one particular location, while other areas with equally urgent needs receive far less attention.
“We reached one conclusion: when organizations operate independently, efforts that have already been undertaken by one company are often duplicated by others. Assistance may also be distributed unevenly. For example, in Bener Meriah Regency, Aceh Province, everyone rushes to provide support there because the available information only highlights Bener Meriah. As a result, aid accumulates in that area while other regions are overlooked,” she explained.
As a solution, Kadin Indonesia has initiated the establishment of a Virtual Business Disaster Operation Center (VBDOC), a collaborative platform designed to connect various stakeholders involved in disaster management.
“VBDOC is essentially a marketplace for disaster management. Through the platform, stakeholders will be able to see who is doing what, what the needs are in each region, and who is available to provide assistance—whether NGOs, businesses, or government institutions. It will also map the capabilities and resources of each organization. Alhamdulillah, the initiative has been well received and positively welcomed. However, this is a long-term endeavor, and there is still much work to be done before we can fully realize it,” Suryani explained.
Meanwhile, Puji Pujiono, Member of the Steering Committee of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), emphasized that business sector involvement in disaster-related issues is a strategic necessity, not only for communities but also for the sustainability of businesses themselves.
According to Puji, there are at least three key interests for businesses in disaster management. First, ensuring business continuity so that operations are not disrupted by disasters. Second, protecting human resources, assets, and company operations. Third, supporting disaster-affected communities while contributing to the development of a stronger resilience system.
“And equally important, during normal times, the business sector should help build a stronger resilience system,” Puji said.
He further revealed that during the discussion, business representatives presented various initiatives they have undertaken, the resources they possess, and opportunities for future collaboration.
“One key takeaway from today’s discussion is that businesses are seeking ways to jointly develop new breakthroughs, including closer coordination with the government, greater utilization of data, and the establishment of a shared operation center for the business community. These are forward-looking initiatives that Kadin, together with its members and businesses of all sizes, is currently conceptualizing,” Puji concluded.
