Four Strategic Digital Sectors to Achieve Digital Indonesia Vision 2045

The government affirms its focus on developing four strategic digital sectors, namely digital infrastructure, digital government, digital economy, and digital society in an effort to realise the Digital Indonesia Vision (VID) 2045. The development of these sectors is carried out through collaboration and active encouragement from all stakeholders.

‘VID has been released as an alternative national digital transformation roadmap for all stakeholders. There are four strategic sectors to focus on, namely digital infrastructure, digital government, digital economy, and digital society,’ said Minister of Communications and Informatics Budi Arie Setiadi in his statement at a Forum Group Discussion with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) in Jakarta, Friday (30/08/2024).

According to Mr Setiadi, VID 2045 is a guide in achieving the Golden Indonesia Vision 2045. Therefore, the Minister encouraged all parties to develop the four strategic digital sectors simultaneously.

‘I always say that these four areas cannot be more advanced than the others. Everything must go hand in hand. Do not let the government go digital, but the people still have problems adapting,’ said the Minister.

Budi Arie added that the telecommunications sector receives serious attention in VID 2045, especially in the deployment of digital infrastructure which includes three main targets.

‘The first is mobile broadband coverage per population, which is targeted to reach 100 per cent between 2030 and 2034. Second, 514 regencies and cities in Indonesia are targeted to have an average internet speed of 1 Gbps (Gigabyte per second) between 2040 and 2045,’ the Minister explained.

Budi Arie further said that mobile broadband coverage in Indonesia is currently at 29 Megabytes per second (Mbps), and is expected to reach the 1 Gbps target with the implementation of VID 2045. In addition, the speed of 6G technology is expected to reach the range of 1 tera or 1,000 Gbps within the next 21 years, and increase the average download speed of mobile broadband internet to 760 Mbps.

‘To achieve this goal, Kominfo encourages connectivity through a combination of various technologies such as fibre to the home, fixed wireless access, and cellular, followed by the adoption of IPv6 technology for gigabit ethernet connectivity,’ said the Minister.

The Minister also mentioned that the solution implemented is through a network deployment strategy with the application of infrastructure sharing, strengthening the Universal Service Obligation (USO) scheme, and joint planning with telecommunications operators.

‘The government is open to various technological options such as the combination of the latest non-terrestrial network technology and the application of regulations for the telecommunications industry to create a healthy competition climate,’ he added.

Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of Kadin Indonesia, Firlie Ganinduto, stated that the discussion on the potential development of the communications and informatics sector covered aspects of information technology, telecommunications, and digital media.

Digitalisation and digital transformation are considered to enable the application of technology to increase efficiency and productivity in various sectors, including public services that are increasingly accessible to the public.

‘I hope we can work together to formulate and implement solutions that will advance the communications and informatics sector. I believe, by working together, we will be closer to a more effective and better digital future,’ Firlie Ganinduto concluded.

Accompanying the Minister was Director of Informatics Empowerment at the Directorate General of Informatics Application, Slamet Santoso.
